"Golf on the Moon" was painted during the COVID-19 pandemic in April 2020 by Gina-Maria Garcia. As a way to connect with her family remotely, she spent the early days of quarantine FaceTiming her aunt, whom she calls Tia Jackie, to pass the time. Born in Honduras, Tia Jackie was a talented professional artist and encouraged Gina-Maria to pick up painting as a quarantine hobby.
During the course of the pandemic, Gina-Maria spent many hours on the phone having profound conversations with her grandfather in Texas, Aldo. Often talking about politics, his Puerto Rican heritage and our life's purpose, her grandfather, who was a proud Air Force Veteran, inspired her to paint a patriotic image with a universal message. It was his love of golf, pride for his country and his profound outlook on the universe that heavily influenced her to paint a golf course on the moon.
And in the creation of the painting, it was Tia Jackie who coached her entirely by FaceTime how to blend colors and how to paint. The painting was made in complete isolation in Orange, CA.
The poem accompanying "Golf on the Moon" was effortlessly created upon completion of the painting - never meant to rhyme, but rather intended to be a quick note explaining to grandpa what the artwork symbolized. Now, she believes the message symbolizes so much more, and hopes the world can derive a deep connection with the universe through her work. She believes someone or something in the universe guided her in creating both the painting and poem, and hopes to discover its purpose by sharing her message with the world.
